Experienced Skydiver Dies in Parachute Accident in Georgia
Over the weekend, a tragic event occurred at a skydiving facility in Georgia, where a seasoned skydiver lost her life after her parachute collided with another jumper. The victim was identified as 48-year-old Jasmine Black, according to Upson County Sheriff Dan Kilgore.
Initial reports indicated that Black’s parachute impacted the gear of another skydiver while they were both approaching the landing zone at Skydive Atlanta, located at Thomaston Upson County Airport.
Witnesses stated that Black had made the decision to cut away her main parachute and then attempted to deploy her emergency chute. Sadly, she was unable to do so due to being too close to the ground.
First responders arrived on the scene before 4:30 PM on Saturday, where they discovered Black unresponsive on the tarmac. Sheriff Kilgore expressed his condolences, calling the incident a “tragic event” and urging the community to keep Black’s family in their thoughts.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is also contributing to the investigation, looking into the parachute systems and the regulations surrounding skydiving operations. They noted that if no regulatory violations are found, the focus may shift entirely to local law enforcement’s inquiries.
The accident has left a significant impact on the skydiving community. Skydive Atlanta released a statement expressing profound sadness for the loss of Jasmine Black, acknowledging the shared grief felt among her family, friends, and fellow skydivers.
Fortunately, the second jumper involved in the incident landed without any injuries, but the weight of such a loss resonates deeply within the sport.
