House Democrats Condemn LA Anti-ICE Riots
On Tuesday, House Democrats voted unanimously in favor of a resolution denouncing the violent anti-ICE riots that erupted in Los Angeles, California.
The resolution garnered support from 217 Republicans, while 206 Democrats opposed it. The protests against ICE deportations in Southern California featured aggressive actions, including attendees throwing rocks and displaying foreign flags.
“Peaceful protest is a constitutional right, but not vandalism, looting, violence, or other crimes,” was the point made by one representative amidst reports that vehicles were set alight during the riots. Interestingly, one news anchor even termed the riot as “relatively peaceful,” invoking comparisons to the 2020 protests which were also characterized as “mostly peaceful” by some outlets.
Hakeem Jeffries, the House Minority Leader, addressed the resolution, stating, “I will not be lectured by extreme MAGA Republicans on issues of law and order.” While he acknowledged a sense of “anxiety” around the events, he refrained from admitting that what occurred could be labeled as a riot.
Jeffries maintained that it was vital to recognize the right to gather and protest peacefully while explicitly condemning violence against law enforcement. However, despite this claim, he and his colleagues ultimately voted against the resolution.
California Republican Rep. Young Kim spearheaded the resolution, emphasizing the clear distinction between peaceful assemblies and chaos. She reiterated, “Protecting public safety should not be controversial,” reflecting ongoing concerns about the public’s anxiety in light of these events.
