Fighting Tomcats Make History
What’s more patriotic than this?
The Fighting Tomcats American Soccer Club secured its first playoff entry by defeating Osners FC 3-1. It was a significant win for the Long Island franchise on Wednesday night.
Head coach John Fitzgerald reflected on the achievement, saying, “I don’t know if it’s fate, but whatever it is, we’ll take it.” This comes just as the U.S. is preparing to celebrate its 250th anniversary.
Last season, the Tomcats fell just short of the playoffs, finishing only a point away. This year, however, they made a solid statement with a 4-2-4 record.
“They’ve had a taste of success, and I’m hoping they’ll get more in the future,” Fitzgerald mentioned. The team’s accomplishment is built on their efforts leading to this moment.
Next up, the Tomcats will face the New York Shockers in Albany, aiming for a chance to compete in the conference finals against New Haven United FC.
“I told the players to savor this moment but also to focus on next Wednesday and take care of themselves,” Fitzgerald added.
He expressed confidence in his players’ professionalism and motivation, stating, “They know what they have to do and are very driven since they are the ones putting in the work.”
Despite his faith in them, he encouraged the team to relax a bit over the weekend with a barbecue. “I joked that I wouldn’t be eating too many hamburgers and hot dogs this week,” he laughed.
Excitement for Ducks Fans
Thousands of fans are excited for the Fourth of July weekend as the Long Island Ball Club plans a spectacular celebration for America’s 250th anniversary. They’re taking their traditional post-game fireworks to the next level.
“There will be more shells and larger displays than usual,” shared team representative Michael Pfaff.
This year, the Ducks are ramping up their fireworks show for three games from Thursday to Saturday, kicking off against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, followed by two matches against the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars.
The theme will undoubtedly have a patriotic touch. Pfaff noted, “Everything will resonate with red, white, and blue.”
And in a fun twist, he teased, “On Independence Day, we’re planning to have George Washington here to throw out the first pitch.”
