McDonald's addresses boycott requests: 'False statements'

McDonald’s is facing calls for a boycott from an activist group called the People’s Union USA, which is criticizing the company’s rollback of previous diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

The group is planning these “economic power outages” between June 24th and 30th. John Schwartz, the founder, has voiced concerns on social media, stating that McDonald’s promises for change are insincere.

He claimed they engage in “meaningless performances” and accused the company of taking advantage of tax loopholes while backing politicians who pose threats to democracy.

In response, a spokesperson for McDonald’s stated that the company serves millions of customers daily and emphasizes an unyielding commitment to inclusion. They mentioned the significant taxes the corporation pays at various levels.

McDonald’s expressed disappointment over what they deemed misleading claims, asserting the company’s focus is on serving its customers and communities effectively.

Schwartz, in a video posted on Tuesday, suggested that the issue extends beyond just fast food. He emphasized the significance of people standing up against corporate greed, tax evasion, and false support for social issues.

This isn’t the first time McDonald’s has revised its DEI initiatives. Earlier this year, the company encouraged suppliers to meet diversity goals or begin diversity training. This shift came after a Supreme Court decision in 2023 that highlighted legal challenges associated with race considerations in hiring processes.

Despite the backlash, McDonald’s executive Jordan Nan assured that core inclusion efforts remain essential to the company. The People’s Union USA is also targeting other major brands such as Amazon, Walmart, Nestle, and General Mills in their campaign for economic action.
