Arch Manning and His Future at Texas

Just a short time ago, Arch Manning was widely regarded as the top high school recruit in the nation. He chose to play for the Texas Longhorns, a decision that opened doors for him—especially when Quinn Ewers was picked in the seventh round of the NFL Draft. This has put Manning in a prime position to emerge as the starting quarterback for Texas.

While Manning has had limited appearances in previous seasons, former college coach Steve Spurrier expresses some skepticism about the expectations surrounding him. He’s not completely convinced yet.

Spurrier, who famously led the Florida Gators to a national championship in 1996, questioned Texas coach Steve Sarkisian’s decision to start Ewers instead of Manning, especially given the discussions surrounding Manning’s talent. “Most people think Texas will win the SEC,” Spurrier mentioned during a recent podcast. “They have Arch Manning, who’s already a Heisman contender. So why did they let Ewers play all last year? Was he really that good?”

Spurrier continued by pressing for clarification from Coach Sark on why Manning didn’t see more playing time. He remarked, “I really just want to know what was behind those decisions.”

During his time waiting for an opportunity, Manning faced speculation about potentially transferring to another school where he might play sooner. In an April interview, the 19-year-old acknowledged the challenges of being patient in today’s college football landscape. “It’s tough, but sometimes waiting pays off,” he reflected.

Manning expressed his commitment to Texas, stating, “I hope it all pays off. I don’t want to be anywhere else. I love it here and have friends, so I want to be the quarterback at the University of Texas.”

Last season, he participated in 10 games, stepping in during an injury to the starter. Manning ended the 2024 season with 939 passing yards, nine touchdowns, and two interceptions, while also showcasing his mobility with 108 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Texas found some success, defeating Clemson in the opening round of the College Football Playoffs and edging out Arizona State in a thrilling overtime match before being knocked out by the Ohio State Buckeyes in January.

The Longhorns are set to face Ohio State again on August 30, 2025, kicking off their season in Columbus.
