Ranked-choice voting might postpone results in NYC Democratic mayoral primary

The polls have closed in New York City, but it may take a while before results are finalized in the Democratic mayoral primary. According to the first unofficial tally, which includes mail-in and initial Election Day votes, Zoran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, is currently leading in the race for the nomination. However, the final outcome could shift once ranked-choice votes are fully counted.

Mamdani, 33, who would be the city’s first Muslim mayor, gained momentum thanks to endorsements from prominent figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders. They’ve helped bolster his campaign significantly.

Meanwhile, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who resigned in 2021 amid accusations of sexual harassment, has been viewed as a strong contender in the race. Reports indicate that he received over 36% of the initial votes, positioning him well for a political comeback.

On the other hand, Mamdani has been collaborating with NYC Director Brad Lander, working together on campaigning strategies leading up to the primary.

Recent tensions have arisen, particularly related to phrases like “Intifada globalization,” which have become points of contention on the campaign trail as conflicts in the Middle East continue. Last week, Lander made headlines after being arrested for allegedly assaulting a federal officer.

New York City employs ranked-choice voting, allowing voters to rank up to five candidates according to their preferences. If a candidate gets more than 50% of the first-choice votes, they win outright; otherwise, the voting proceeds into rounds where the lowest candidates are eliminated, and their votes are redistributed based on next preferences.

As no candidate achieved the required majority on Tuesday, the counting of ranked-choice votes may take some time. The city has until July 1 to complete the tally, which also includes mail-in votes.

Compounding the situation, a heatwave could deter older voters from heading to the polls, potentially impacting turnout in favor of Cuomo, who has a strong union backing compared to Mamdani’s grassroots campaign.

Cuomo has been striving to restore his image after multiple accusations of sexual misconduct and scrutiny over his administration’s handling of COVID-19 in nursing homes. Despite this, he continues to question Mamdani’s experience as a candidate.

In a critique, Cuomo’s campaign described Mamdani as dangerously inexperienced while he promotes himself as a seasoned crisis manager. Notably, Mamdani’s platform includes proposals like eliminating fares for New York City’s university system.

Celebrities in NYC, including Cynthia Nixon and Emily Ratajkowski, have encouraged their followers to support Mamdani, while former Mayor Bill de Blasio urged voters not to rank Cuomo.

According to NYC election officials, over 384,000 Democrats participated in early voting that concluded on Sunday. The mayor’s approval rating has slipped significantly, prompting current Mayor Eric Adams, a moderate elected as a Democrat, to run for reelection as an independent.

Adams is facing his own challenges as he was charged with multiple counts related to bribery and fraud. However, earlier this year, those charges were dismissed while he partnered with the Trump administration on immigration issues.

As the primary unfolds, the political landscape in New York City appears quite dynamic, with several candidates vying for attention and support.
