Political Analyst Criticizes Senator for Not Acknowledging Trump’s Foreign Policy Success

Mark Halperin, a political analyst, took aim at Delaware Senator Chris Coons for failing to commend President Donald Trump on his foreign policy achievements concerning Iran and NATO.

On Monday, Trump revealed that Israel and Iran had come to a ceasefire, just two days after the U.S. launched airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities. During an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Tuesday, Halperin played various clips, pointing out Coons’ lack of praise for Trump’s accomplishments.

Halperin remarked, “I listen even to wise Democrats. I have such a strong Trump crazy syndrome so, you know, they never seem to mention anything positive about Donald Trump. And sure, some on the left have principled objections, which is fine.” He added that while Democrats criticize Trump’s methods, they overlook the fact that he has at least temporarily brokered peace.

He argued, “There are reasonable Democrats who could say, ‘Bravo, President, I might not agree with you, but at least something has happened.’ Instead, there’s this insistence on nitpicking—like, ‘He didn’t consult Congress first.'”

Halperin then showed a clip of Coons responding to questions about Trump’s actions. While Coons voiced support for curbing Iran’s nuclear ambitions, he also criticized Trump for not following proper procedure by informing Congress. Halperin commented, “It’s like someone runs into a burning building to save a puppy, and all I’m hearing is complaints about how they saved it. Who cares if they didn’t ask for my permission?”

“That’s just bad politics—to not come together in support of success,” he continued, emphasizing the need for leaders to unite around achievements. “If you have principled objections, fine, but right now, focus on the outcome,” he insisted.

The Trump administration is also urging NATO allies to increase their defense spending, with many agreeing to a target of 5% of GDP. Coons addressed this on “Morning Joe” as well, but again, did not acknowledge Trump’s efforts.

In discussing NATO, Coons highlighted the commitment to bolster support for Ukraine against Russian aggression but stopped short of commending Trump. Halperin responded, “This is a story of how Trump pushed NATO countries to contribute more, something many Americans have wanted. Yet people like Chris Coons said it would wreck NATO, and now he won’t give Trump credit for it.”

Halperin called for Americans to set aside political differences and recognize successes, noting, “On issues of national security, celebrating victories—even if they benefit the president—would make the country better. Whether or not the deal with Iran succeeds, you have to acknowledge what Trump has accomplished.”
