Indiana Fever Parts Ways with DeWanna Bonner

Indiana Fever has officially moved on from DeWanna Bonner, as reported by Chloe Peterson, an Indie Star. The team has signed Aari McDonald on an annual contract at the veteran minimum.

Bonner, who missed the last five games for personal reasons, has apparently expressed no desire to return to the Fever, according to a report from Front Office Sports. It seems her fit with the team was off from the beginning. She was brought in to anchor the team’s younger players with her championship experience but ultimately wasn’t able to fulfill that role.

This season has been particularly challenging for Bonner, who is in her 17th year. She’s averaged 7.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.6 assists over nine games. Although she started strong, being part of the first three games, she ended up coming off the bench as Lexie Hull took the spotlight. Her shooting percentage plummeted to a career-low 34.5% this season.

When Bonner joined the Fever as a free agent, many considered her a key addition to a championship-caliber roster. She was the WNBA’s third all-time leading scorer and had just come off her sixth All-Star appearance.

In a statement, Bonner expressed her gratitude towards Indiana Fever for the opportunity to be part of the franchise. While she shared excitement for the season, she acknowledged that the fit wasn’t right and appreciated the organization’s willingness to let her move on at this stage in her career.

Aari McDonald to Boost Fever Roster

Aari McDonald, who was the third overall pick in 2021, is expected to slot in nicely with Indiana after signing a hard-working contract.

In her brief time on the court, she has averaged 11 points and three assists while shooting 42.9% from the field and 37.5% from three-point range. The Fever had to part ways with McDonald after reaching the minimum player count but are now excited to bring her back.

Bonner’s time with the Fever has certainly ended on a disappointing note, but bringing McDonald into the fold could enhance the team’s chances for a championship run.

Amber Cox, Fever’s general manager, noted that from the moment McDonald arrived in Indianapolis, she seamlessly integrated into the team’s style and mentality. Her impact as both a playmaker and defender was evident, and the team is thrilled to have her for the remainder of the season.

Meanwhile, Lexie Hull is having a standout year, averaging 9.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game—hitting a career-high 48.5% from the field and 55.3% from three-point territory.

As of now, the Fever began the season with a record of 7-7, ranking seventh overall in the WNBA. Caitlyn Clark also missed five games earlier this month due to a quad strain.
