Ketel Marte of the Diamondbacks tears up on the field following fan remarks about his late mother

Emotional Moment for Ketel Marte During Game

In a touching scene on Tuesday, Ketel Marte, the Arizona Diamondbacks’ star second baseman, was seen shedding tears during a pitching change in the team’s 4-1 win over the Chicago White Sox. This emotional response was triggered by comments from fans regarding his late mother.

Marte, who is 31, lost his mother, Elpidia Valdez, in a tragic car accident back in 2017 in the Dominican Republic. Diamondbacks manager Tory Lovullo noticed Marte’s emotional state and stepped in, wrapping his arms around him to offer some comfort.

Lovullo later mentioned that he heard the hurtful comments directed at Marte and confirmed that he and bench coach Jeff Banister had requested the removal of the offending fan from the game. “It was a terrible moment,” Lovullo said, clearly shaken. “I reacted like anyone would when seeing someone they care about in distress. It was painful to see him cry.”

Lovullo added that he reassured Marte he wasn’t alone and labeled the heckler an “idiot.” Marte’s teammate, shortstop Gerald Perdomo, expressed strong sentiments, arguing that fans like that should face bans to prevent such incidents in the future.

Despite the emotional turmoil, Marte performed well that day, going 2-4 and launching his first solo home run, giving the Diamondbacks an early lead. He’s having an impressive season, boasting a batting average around .300 and contributing significantly with 31 RBIs across 52 games.

The Diamondbacks, currently 41-38, are set to play the final game of their series against the White Sox on Wednesday, aiming for a series sweep after winning the first two games.
