Susan Smith, a South Carolina mother convicted of murdering her two young children, is seeking parole again. At 53 years old, she’s been serving a life sentence since the tragic drowning of her sons in a lake back in 1994. It will be 30 years in prison by November 2024 when her next eligibility for parole arises.
Smith, who received a sentence of 30 years to life, is again looking for a chance at release. The tragic event, which occurred on October 25, 1994, involved her strapping her 3-year-old son, Michael, and 14-month-old Alexander into the backseat of her car, which she then drove into John D. Long Lake.
She has recounted how it took her six minutes to watch as the water filled the car, ultimately drowning her boys as they sank to the lake’s bottom.
On July 22, 1995, she was convicted, and prosecutors strongly argued for a life sentence given the severe nature of the crime. The case shocked the nation, and she was sentenced accordingly.
In her first attempt at parole in 2024, the board denied her request, citing the horrific details of her actions and her past criminal behavior as reasons for the denial.
At a recent hearing, Smith expressed remorse, stating, “I know what I did was terrible… I’m so sorry for what they went through… I wish I could take it back, I honestly do… I was just scared.” These words came during a rather emotional appeal.
However, her disciplinary record in prison has also impacted her attempts for parole. In August 2025, she faced charges for violating prison rules by communicating with a crime witness. This included speaking to a documentary filmmaker shortly after being warned against such discussions.
Her last hearing is now set for November 19, 2026, and if denied this time around, she can apply again in two years, which seems to be a recurring cycle. It’s unsettling, isn’t it? Each hearing drags up the painful history and the unresolved feelings surrounding such a tragic case.
