Illinois Governor JB Pritzker set to share plans for a unique third term.

Democratic Governor JB Pritzker of Illinois is expected to announce on Thursday his intention to seek a third four-year term, according to reliable sources. The billionaire, known for owning Hyatt Hotels and for his various venture capital initiatives, plans to make this announcement in Chicago before heading to Springfield, the state capital.

Illinois ranks as the sixth most populated state in the U.S. and has no term limits for state officials. However, it has not seen a three-term governor for over three decades since GOP Governor Jim Thompson held office in the 1970s and 1980s.

Pritzker, who has openly criticized President Trump’s policies, indicated in an interview earlier this year that the country is “in a constitutional crisis,” emphasizing that many individuals are not benefiting from the current administration’s moves. “We have to prepare for the fight,” he mentioned when discussing the political landscape.

At 60, Pritzker has taken steps to “protect Trump” in his predominantly Democratic state, stating, “You come for my people, you come through me.” His reelection campaign in 2026 won’t likely hinder his potential bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028.

During the 2024 campaign, he played a prominent role, similar to notable figures like President Biden and Vice President Harris, after stepping in as a candidate last summer. His influence has led to hosting critical presidential primary elections in states like Nevada, pivotal for Democratic votes and early voting activities, and even returning to New Hampshire to attend major fundraising events this spring, which sparked further speculation regarding his future ambitions.
