Ron DeSantis jokes that the victory of a socialist will drive Florida property values sky-high

DeSantis Comments on New York Mayoral Race

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis remarked on Wednesday that the potential win of Zoran Mamdani, the Democratic candidate for mayor of New York City, could lead to an exodus from the city.

Mamdani was admitted to the Democratic primary by former Governor Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday night. DeSantis suggested that this exit from New York could positively impact property values in Florida. “If this socialist mayoral candidate wins, we’re going to see real estate values rise even further in Palm Beach as people leave the city,” he stated during a bill signing event. He compared Mamdani to former Mayor Bill de Blasio, implying that Mamdani’s policies could be even more detrimental.

The value of real estate in Florida has surged, showing an increase of 191.9% over the decade that ended in July 2022, according to Quantum Realty Advisors. Many residents have been leaving blue states, particularly California and New York, for warmer climates like Florida.

In March, DeSantis proposed a cut in property taxes and expressed a desire to push for constitutional amendments aimed at eliminating property taxes altogether by the 2026 vote. He argued against sales tax reductions benefiting tourists more than Florida residents, although he sees it as a philosophical issue. “You have to keep paying the government for the privilege of using your property. That’s not how good tax policy should work,” he asserted.

DeSantis criticized Mamdani’s stance on law enforcement, stating, “He believes you shouldn’t have law enforcement in high-crime areas and should rely on social workers instead. Just look at how that works out.” He seemed skeptical about the feasibility of such an approach.

During his time in office, DeSantis has signed several laws that align with conservative values, including a bill that limits abortion after six weeks, enacted in April 2023, following the Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade in June 2022.

In 2022, DeSantis also gained significant attention for his handling of various cultural issues, marking a decisive victory over former Democratic opponent Charlie Crist. His administration has had a tumultuous relationship with Disney since 2022, mainly due to legislation aimed at curtailing the company’s power following their opposition to certain state policies.
