Whit Merrifield Announces Retirement from MLB

Three-time All-Star Whit Merrifield took to social media Tuesday to announce his retirement from Major League Baseball.

In his post, Merrifield reflected on how fortunate he felt to play in various cities over the course of his career. He even humorously expressed his apologies to the Philadelphia Phillies for not performing up to expectations during his brief time there. “Philly, I liked you more than you liked me. Sorry,” he shared.

His time with the Phillies in 2024 resulted in a challenging performance—53 games with a batting average of just .199, hitting three home runs and driving in 11 runs. It was a noticeable dip from his usual consistency, which left fans and observers surprised.

Throughout his nine seasons in the league, Merrifield maintained a .280 batting average and hit a total of 94 home runs. He spent a significant portion of his career with the Kansas City Royals before being traded to the Toronto Blue Jays at the 2022 deadline. After two seasons in Toronto, he joined the Phillies ahead of the 2024 season.

Following his designation for assignment by the Phillies, Merrifield signed with the Atlanta Braves to finish out the 2024 season.

Merrifield stated that deciding to retire was relatively straightforward for him, primarily due to the birth of his child with his wife in March 2024.

Reflecting on his career, he noted one main regret: not winning a World Series title with any of the teams he played for. Merrifield was recognized as a leader in several categories, leading the league in hits twice (2018, 2019) and in steals in 2018, with a significant tally of 45, as well as leading the American League in steals in both 2017 and 2021.
