Rep. Laura Gillen Critiques Zoran Mamdani’s Mayoral Campaign
Rep. Laura Gillen (D-NY) has raised concerns regarding Democratic socialist Zoran Mamdani, labeling him as “too extreme” to lead New York City after he emerged as the frontrunner in the city’s Democratic mayoral primary.
Gillen’s statement condemned Mamdani’s campaign, characterizing it as “founded on unrealistic promises and increased taxes.”
“Socialist Zohran Mamdani is too extreme to lead New York City,” Gillen expressed. “His entire campaign revolves around what New York doesn’t need: unrealistic promises and higher taxes.”
“Moreover, Mamdani’s suggestion to refund the police shows a troubling trend of unacceptable anti-Semitic remarks amid a rise in anti-Semitism,” she added. “He is absolutely the wrong choice for our city.”
This statement follows former New York governor Andrew Cuomo’s acknowledgment of Mamdani’s lead in the primary election on Tuesday night.
“Tonight wasn’t our night,” Cuomo stated. “It’s Mamdani’s night. He ran a fantastic campaign, resonated with the youth, inspired them, and got them out to vote.”
Mamdani captured 43.5% of the votes, totaling 432,305, while Cuomo trailed with 36.4% and 361,840 votes. The New York City Director Bloodlander came in third with 11.3%, or 112,349 votes.
Cuomo recognized Mamdani’s lead but noted that the final result would depend on the selected rankings.
“In the words of Nelson Mandela, it always seems impossible until it’s done,” Mamdani remarked on X. “Friends, this is happening. I’m honored to be your Democratic nominee for Mayor of New York.”
Mamdani has proposed establishing a city-operated grocery store, highlighting the burden of grocery costs affecting residents.
“We’ll redirect urban funds from companies that prioritize profit to city-owned grocery stores,” Mamdani explained in a video. “These stores wouldn’t be driven by profit motives or burdened with property tax and rent, and we’ll ensure those savings benefit the community.”
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has voiced support for Mamdani, insisting on the need for “new leadership” to challenge corporate interests.
“In these precarious times, politics alone isn’t enough,” Sanders commented. “We require a leadership ready to confront the power of major corporations and advocate for the working class. Zoran Mamdani embodies that vision. He is the best candidate for New York City mayor.”
