Democrats Appoint New Ranking Member
Nancy Pelosi’s daughter recently referenced CNN reporter Andrew Kaczynski’s late daughter in a Twitter exchange. Kaczynski, known as “Kfile” on Twitter, highlighted that 47-year-old California Representative Robert Garcia was elected as the new ranking member of the House Oversight Committee.
Kfile made a pointed comment about the committee spots being filled by Democrats who are either under 75 or “not cancerous.” Garcia emerged victorious against Massachusetts Rep. Stephen Lynch and will succeed former Virginia Rep. Jerry Connolly, who passed away from cancer at 75 last May.
Before Connolly’s tenure, Jamie Raskin, a Maryland representative, held the Democratic ranking member position and is now serving on the House Judiciary Committee.
When Democrats previously held a majority in the House, the oversight committee was led by Carolyn Maloney, who was 73 during her leadership, and Elijah Cummings, who died at 68 due to health issues.
Despite the trend of promoting older politicians and women, Christine Pelosi—daughter of the 85-year-old former Speaker Nancy Pelosi—offered her own exception to Kfile’s comments. In a dismissive tweet, she stated, “Team Beans joke about cancer to own an old dem,” along with a shrug emoji.
“Team Beans” is a fundraising initiative established by Kaczynski and his wife in memory of their daughter, Francesca “Mame,” who died from a brain tumor at just nine months old. The initiative has raised over $3.5 million for childhood brain tumor research since its inception.
Kaczynski responded to Christine’s tweet, questioning the relevance of her comments. He reiterated, “There’s zero reason I use it,” adding a shrug emoji. Pelosi responded again, pointing out the insensitivity of making cancer-related jokes, especially considering the personal loss of Kaczynski’s daughter.
Kaczynski continued the exchange, suggesting that Pelosi’s commentary reflected a broader issue with Democratic leadership appointments, wrapping up his response with multiple shrug emojis.
