Adams reminisces about dinner with Zohran Mamdani at Gracie Mansion while criticizing the Democratic primary winner's 'wealth'

Adams Criticizes Mamdani’s Background

Mayor Eric Adams reflected on a one-year-ago incident involving Democratic representatives Zoran Mamdani and his father, during an event at Gracie Mansion. This came as Mamdani is gaining attention in the lead-up to the elections.

Hezoner, one of the few left-wing candidates in the race, challenged Mamdani during a meeting with the Post’s editorial board while discussing his own re-election campaign.

“This guy is not really a hardworking member of the working class. He comes from a wealthy background,” said Adams, who identifies as a democratic socialist.

Adams, who is 64, noted that prior to Mamdani announcing his candidacy, he hosted both Mamdani and his father, Professor Mahmood Mamdani, for dinner. “They came to Gracie Mansion about a year and a half ago, and we had a meal together,” Adams recalled.

He emphasized that someone with wealth might have a different perspective on community support, asserting, “It’s easy to overlook those in need when you come from privilege.” Adams expressed skepticism about some of Mamdani’s proposed giveaways.

A representative from the Adams Campaign confirmed that the dinner took place before Mamdani had officially launched his campaign and also mentioned the informal meetings involving various officials.

Adams’ spokesman, Todd Shapiro, stated, “The Mayor regularly invites elected officials and their families to Gracie Mansion to foster relationships throughout the government.”

Mamdani’s father is a distinguished professor at Columbia University, while his mother, Mira Nair, is known for her work in film and has received an Oscar nomination.

The family moved to New York from Uganda during Mamdani’s childhood, and although they faced financial struggles, they had a base in an affluent neighborhood, which made things a bit easier.

Mamdani graduated from Bowdoin College and has held various roles in advocacy before serving as a state legislator since 2021, though he hasn’t pushed through many significant policies during his tenure.

Hezoner, who recently stepped back from the Democratic primary, has his own story, having been raised by a single mother in South Jamaica. He joined the NYPD and progressed to the rank of captain before diving into politics.

Adams has experience as a state senator and Brooklyn Borough president, having been elected mayor in 2021. As he campaigns to retain his position, he is critical of what he perceives as Mamdani’s inexperience in managing city affairs.

On Tuesday night, Mamdani surprised many with a strong performance, securing the Democratic nomination against former governor Andrew Cuomo, with Adams, Mamdani, Republican Curtis Sliwa, and attorney Jim Walden also in the mix.
