Dallas Mavericks Select Cooper Flagg as No. 1 Pick in NBA Draft
In what may be one of the most predictable moves in sports history, the Dallas Mavericks officially chose Duke sensation Cooper Flagg as the first overall pick in the NBA Draft on Wednesday night.
After winning the NBA Draft Lottery, it seemed like this decision was set in stone. Yet, many conspiracy theorists misbelieve that Flagg’s selection was planned long before the lottery event on May 12.
Earlier this year, the Mavericks caused quite a stir by pulling off a surprising trade involving franchise player Luka Doncic. In a deal with the Los Angeles Lakers and the Utah Jazz, they managed to secure Anthony Davis. However, this led to speculation about whether Flagg was somehow part of that trade, raising eyebrows online.
When asked about the conspiracy theories, Flagg responded with a light chuckle, expressing uncertainty. “I don’t really know what to say about that,” he said. “If that’s what people are thinking, I don’t have insider information, but I’m grateful for how everything turned out.”
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, in a recent podcast, dismissed the rumors, explaining that he only learned about Doncic’s trade moments before it was public. “I didn’t have secret knowledge or anything,” he clarified.
Yet, the gossip persists. Fans are left wondering if the Mavericks will trade for top players from the Lakers, a franchise with incredible popularity. The odds? A mere 1.8%, but in sports, anything can happen.
Of course, the league won’t outright admit to manipulating the draft process. Still, Cooper Flagg is now an official player for the Dallas Mavericks, and he’s in a position to potentially become an iconic figure in the NBA.
As the NBA grapples with declining viewership, there’s hope among officials that Flagg could be the superstar needed to draw in casual fans. Whether he’ll rise to that challenge remains to be seen.
