Ronnie Mauricio’s Focus Amid Roster Decisions
Ronnie Mauricio isn’t letting the upcoming roster crunch weigh on his mind. The possibility of Mark Vientos recovering from hamstring issues means that Mauricio could be sent back to the minors after spending three weeks with the Mets.
As the Mets approach a crucial decision night, Vientos is set to return to the lineup on Thursday. By Friday, Mauricio was making a compelling case to stay in the majors.
In a 7-3 victory against the Braves at Citifield, Mauricio hit his third home run of the season. This game also marked his first career stretch of three hits in a single game. After dipping to .171 last week, he displayed the potential that made him a top prospect, raising his batting average to .224.
“The outcome isn’t always what you want,” Mauricio mentioned to the Post via an interpreter. “But, I think it’s all about sticking to your plan.”
This week, Mets president of baseball operations, David Stearns, remarked that the team has high expectations for Mauricio. Although he missed the entirety of 2024 due to a torn ACL, and has had limited at-bats this year, Stearns noted clear signs of Mauricio’s talent—his strength and ability to hit the ball hard, along with his versatility in the field.
Mauricio’s capabilities were on display again during his second consecutive game playing at two positions, following three starts against the Braves last week. He made notable plays, including a hit that sent the ball over the right field fence and contributed to a scoring stretch in the fourth inning. Manager Carlos Mendoza praised him for being “in control” and using the entire field effectively.
“I haven’t been around him much,” Mendoza commented, “but it’s impressive to see how he manages adversity at the big league level, especially after everything he faced last year.”
However, Mauricio might find the timing unfavorable. His inconsistent performance could jeopardize his spot on the roster, particularly post-June 2nd, when Vientos is expected back. This situation means someone, potentially either Mauricio or Bati, may be reassigned to Syracuse soon, with other players like infielder Louis Sanger Ackna and catcher Francisco Alvarez also part of roster considerations this week.
But if Wednesday’s game was any indication, Mauricio reminded the Mets once again of his potential contributions.
“My aim is hopeful for Mark’s recovery, and I’m ready to support the team in any way I can,” Mauricio stated. “If a roster decision is needed, I understand. I’m here for whatever the team requires of me.”
