O’Keefe Family Seeks Justice After Acquittal of Karen Read

This week, the family of Boston police officer John O’Keefe, who was tragically killed during a snowstorm on January 29, 2022, is pushing for justice. Their plea comes just days after it was revealed that Karen Read, the former girlfriend of O’Keefe, had read the murder charges against her.

Read, 45, received only a year of probation for a drunk driving incident, but she was acquitted of more serious charges like second-degree murder, manslaughter, and leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

“The only way we could find some peace in this would have been a conviction,” expressed O’Keefe’s cousin, Vanessa Rigitano, to a local news outlet. There’s a palpable sense of frustration among the family.

Moreover, the special prosecutor noted that Read would be aware of the reactions of her supporters, which raises questions about the dynamics following the verdict.

After the verdict, Read celebrated with her family and legal team, igniting a mix of emotions from O’Keefe’s loved ones. Rigitano voiced her dismay at the celebration, saying, “I was tired of hearing those words come out of her mouth, literally.”

“His loved ones, including the prosecutor, his family, and I were the hardest people Johnny fought,” Rigitano stated.

The jury spent four days deliberating after hearing testimonies for over a month during a retrial. Previously, the case had been declared a mistrial, leading to additional scrutiny over judicial conduct.

Defense attorney Hank Brennan mentioned his disappointment regarding the outcome, emphasizing that he aimed to achieve justice for O’Keefe.
