Nearly a decade after the tragic murder of college baseball player Calvin Riley, federal authorities have revealed new information in hopes of solving the case. On Tuesday, they shared a fresh sketch of a second individual believed to be linked to the crime.
Calvin Riley, just 20 years old, was considered a promising talent for the San Joaquin Delta College Mustangs. He was shot while playing Pokémon Go with a friend at Aquatic Park in San Francisco on August 6, 2016.
According to the FBI, the friend was walking along the promenade when the two were attacked by a shot that came from a Northwest direction.
The male suspect is thought to have been driving a vehicle parked nearby, accompanied by a woman with blonde hair, estimated to be in her twenties or thirties. Another man reportedly captured video footage of the scene.
Authorities identified two suspicious vehicles: a white 2015 Hyundai Sonata and a dark-colored Audi A3 wagon. Both cars reportedly arrived at the location just before the shooting and left together shortly after.
In the aftermath of the murder, police had initially released a sketch of one suspect believed to be involved.
Earlier, a family friend mentioned that Riley and his group noticed someone observing them from a hill above the park, but it was dark, and they were focused on their phones and the game.
The motive remains unclear. Investigators found no altercation, and both Riley’s wallet and phone were left untouched.
Calvin’s father, Sean Riley, expressed his sadness, saying he deeply misses his son and wishes for closure. He hopes that this new development could be pivotal in the investigation, commending the FBI’s efforts after all these years.
Originally from Boston, Calvin was a talented pitcher with dreams of playing for the Boston Red Sox while also being a fan of the San Francisco Giants.
In a heartfelt message on a dedicated Facebook page, the family vowed not to forget Calvin, pledging to seek justice for him. They also highlighted that not a moment goes by without thinking of him.
The FBI has offered a reward of up to $25,000 for any information that leads to the arrest of those responsible for Calvin Riley’s murder. Anyone with information should contact the FBI’s San Francisco Field Office or submit tips online.
