NYPD Detective Retires After 35 Years of Service

An NYPD drug officer, who rose through the ranks in the Bronx bicycle unit, has retired after a notable career spanning 35 years.

Detective John Hourican was honored on Thursday at PSA 6 in Harlem. The event was attended by approximately 100 friends, family members, and colleagues who shared stories and memories from his long tenure on the force.

“We were able to make films, tell stories, and celebrate many achievements,” he reflected while wearing his formal police uniform.

“I think you could say I found my home, my NFL. The people here know and live this.”

Hourican previously served in the Navy for four years before joining the NYPD and attending the Police Academy. His initial assignment was as a bicycle patrolman on City Island, later transitioning to drug enforcement, where he collaborated with an undercover team for five years in the Bronx.

By the early 2000s, he was conducting independent research and representing the Detective Donation Association, while also leading significant drug operations.

A colleague, Stephen Ortiz, described Hourican as deeply committed to both his work and the welfare of his fellow officers. “You’ve always looked out for your peers, and you have genuine concerns for them,” Ortiz said.

Ortiz shared how Hourican played a direct role in reducing serious crime rates in East Harlem’s 25th Ward, recounting instances where Hourican secured numerous search warrants and achieved significant goals in crime reduction.

“I commend you for that, thank you for everything you’ve done,” he added.

As a father of two sons, Hourican celebrated the day with his wife and mother, while bagpipes played in the background. The ceremony concluded with an NYPD Chopper Flyover, followed by a nostalgic ride in a 2002 NYPD squad car.

“We have more time ahead of us,” he told his wife. “I want us to spend it together. We’re not finished enjoying life together yet. We may be in New York for a bit longer, but soon we’ll be in North Carolina. Let’s make the most of it.”
