Advisor threatened a Columbine-like assault at a Texas Christian camp

A 23-year-old man, Mario Bernal from Vernal, Utah, was arrested last weekend for allegedly threatening to “create the next Columbine shooting” if the children at a Texas summer camp “offended him.” This incident took place on Sunday at Christian Camp Cho Yo in Livingston, according to a statement from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities indicated that Bernal is facing charges of making a terrorist threat, and his actions have raised significant concerns. He reportedly mentioned his desire to replicate the tragic events of the 1999 Columbine High School shooting. Additionally, he might also be dealing with accusations related to child abuse, as he has faced allegations of cruel behavior during his time as a camp counselor.

During his time at the camp, at least one staff member claimed to have witnessed Bernal locking a group of children in a hot room as a form of punishment. This alarming behavior led to his dismissal from the camp.

Police received reports about his threats and apprehended him near the entrance of the camp, finding him in a vehicle. The local police chief emphasized the seriousness of threats involving children and commended the prompt actions of law enforcement in addressing the situation.

Currently, Bernal remains in custody at the Polk County Jail, with a bond set at $250,000.
