Lawler Gauges Support for Possible Governor Run

ALBANY – Republican Representative Mike Lawler is actively seeking backing from state party leaders as he weighs the decision to enter next year’s gubernatorial race.

Last weekend, officials from the Hudson Valley visited six counties, engaging with numerous county GOP committee chairs, elected officials, and party loyalists.

Some local Republican leaders expressed their willingness to back Democrat Kathy Hochul in the 2026 election. Mark Heberling, GOP Chairman of Catalaugas County, remarked, “Kathy Hochul doesn’t have four more years. I know Mike is a proven winner in the Purple district,” referring to Lawler, who represents the 17th Congressional District.

Heberling shared, “It was a very positive meeting. It was exciting to have a quality candidate interested in the governor’s race. We’re very excited about Mike.”

Another county chairman, who preferred to remain anonymous, noted that Lawler is already “combat tested.”

“We need to choose someone who can win in November,” he stated. “He will win a district with another 80,000 Democrats.”

The campaign trip included stops in Niagara, Catalaugas, Steuben, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Oswego counties, according to itineraries shared by Lawler’s camp.

Lawler expressed gratitude for being welcomed by county chairs and party leaders, stating, “I appreciated the encouragement from many who are seriously considering a run for governor.”

He added, “The House of Representatives will continue to tour the state, meet party leaders, and lay the groundwork for a potential challenge against America’s worst governor — Kathy Hochul.”

Lawler’s trip coincided with North Country Councilman Elise Stefanik starting to challenge Hochul, although details about her campaign launch remain unclear.

Recent surveys indicated that Stefanik is in a tight race with Hochul in a hypothetical matchup.

“It all comes down to Elise’s decisions, and she usually makes those with strategic timing,” a national GOP operative commented.

Stefanik’s prominence and fundraising ability could energize New York’s Republican base.

Former President Trump hinted last month that he might support Stefanik, even while endorsing Lawler’s Congressional re-election efforts.

A GOP leader acknowledged the subtle dynamics unfolding between Lawler and Stefanik, contemplating the possibility of one emerging as the party’s candidate for the Executive Mansion.

“Many Republican leaders are looking to the president for guidance on this race,” shared another county GOP chair who remains neutral between the two lawmakers.

“Once the president makes his move, it could consolidate our efforts and propel us into the general election with one candidate,” the chairman added.
