Democratic Socialists of California Express Discontent Over Gubernatorial Support
The Democratic Socialists of California have made their choice in the gubernatorial race, but it’s not one they’re thrilled about.
They’ve reluctantly backed billionaire Tom Steyer, a figure with a background in private equity who has already spent huge sums in two political campaigns: first for the presidency in 2020 and now for the governor’s seat in California.
In their voter guide, the California Democratic Socialists noted, “Even if he views himself as frivolous, his wealth was accumulated through exploiting the working class.”
They pointed out that much of Steyer’s wealth had come from investments in private prisons and coal mining, industries he now criticizes.
Nevertheless, they acknowledged him as the most progressive choice among the current candidates, stating, “Only time will tell if he’s genuinely a class traitor.”
With a membership of around 100,000 nationwide, the DSA has a significant presence.
Having run Farallon Capital, Steyer’s net worth exceeds $2 billion, and he’s invested over $100 million into his gubernatorial campaign.
Current polls indicate he’s heavily investing in advertisements that promote progressive policies, such as increasing taxes on corporations and the wealthy, and he’s currently trailing behind Democratic frontrunner Xavier Becerra.
Interestingly, Steyer embraces the “class traitor” label, often appearing in hats and T-shirts that feature the term.
Additionally, socialists pointed to his support for trans women in sports and his distancing from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee as noteworthy aspects of his platform.
