Mark Vientos Set to Return for Mets After Injury Layoff

Mark Vientos is gearing up to rejoin the Mets as the 2024 season progresses, following some earlier time spent in the minors. His recent absence from the game was primarily due to a hamstring injury that sidelined him for over three weeks starting in early June.

Now, he’s expected to be activated from the 10-day injured list before the Mets face off against Pittsburgh. With about 80 games remaining, Vientos is eager to re-establish himself in the lineup.

“It’s great to be back with the guys, see familiar faces, and jump right in,” said the 25-year-old in the Mets’ clubhouse following a 4-0 win at Citi Field. “I’ve had my ups and downs, especially in the first half of my career. It’s a marathon, not a sprint—162 games is a lot, and I want to be part of all of them.”

Last season, Vientos demonstrated his potential, wrapping up with 27 home runs and 71 RBIs over 111 games, highlighting a comeback that began after he was sent down to Triple-A Syracuse.

He also contributed five home runs and a strong 14 RBI in 13 postseason games.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza emphasized Vientos’ importance to the team, stating, “He has been a key player for us. We’re looking to him again. He can hit well across the lineup, and we need that kind of power.” Mendoza expressed confidence in Vientos’ versatility as they look to strengthen the batting order.

Before his injury, Vientos struggled a bit, posting a .230 average with six home runs and a .676 OPS in 208 plate appearances before getting hurt in Los Angeles on June 2.

Reflecting on his time away from the field, Vientos mentioned, “I kept thinking about coming back to the league, especially to the big leagues. It’s tougher than I anticipated.” He acknowledged feeling a bit humbled by the experience and expressed gratitude for his moments off the field.

The exact roster moves for his return are still uncertain, but infielders Brett Baty, Ronnie Mauricio, or outfielder Travis Jankowski could see adjustments. Baty has been particularly noteworthy this season, racking up eight home runs and 27 RBIs in just 59 games.

The team continues to face lineup challenges, with Mendoza likening it to a puzzle that requires careful positioning of all the pieces. “With our depth, finding the right fit is a good problem to have,” he said.

In terms of his physical condition, Vientos recognizes the importance of his health management, stating, “Hamstrings were a big issue, but there are little things I need to monitor to ensure my body’s ready. I definitely don’t want to repeat this situation.”
