New details emerged on Tuesday regarding the 2016 murder of Calvin Riley, a 20-year-old college baseball player who was shot while playing Pokemon GO in San Francisco.
The FBI unveiled a new sketch of a second person of interest believed to be associated with Riley’s murder, which occurred at Aquatic Park. The sketch depicts a man described as middle-aged, with a chunky face and a beard, wearing glasses. Authorities are offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to his identification.
At the time of the incident, Riley was a prominent pitcher at San Joaquin Delta College. He was at the park with a friend on August 6, 2016, around 9:50 PM, when they sensed someone observing them from a hill nearby, although they couldn’t make out who it was.
Reports indicate that the suspect was filming a video at the scene. The FBI previously identified another male suspect, believed to have driven a vehicle near the site of the shooting while accompanied by a blonde woman, likely in her 20s or 30s.
Investigators found two vehicles of interest in the area—a 2015 white Hyundai Sonata and a dark-colored Audi A3 wagon.
The FBI stated that there were no conflicts or interactions between Riley, his friends, and anyone else prior to the shooting, leaving the motive unclear. Interestingly, Riley had his belongings with him after the incident, suggesting he wasn’t targeted for theft.
For nearly a decade, the case remained unsolved until recent developments. Sean Riley, Calvin’s father, expressed his gratitude towards the FBI for their persistent efforts in finding the person responsible for his son’s death.
“I think they did an outstanding job,” Sean mentioned, reflecting on the nine years since the tragedy. He has always felt that Calvin was specifically targeted and hopes the new sketch could lead to progress in the case.
The murder not only put a premature end to Calvin’s aspirations of playing Major League Baseball but also had a profound impact on his family, as Sean noted.
The grieving father shared that the tragic event contributed to the breakdown of his marriage, affecting their family and friends deeply.
“It’s very sad. It’s a lot of sleepless nights,” he said. “You’re just trying to deal with it.”
Sean praised his son’s character and leadership qualities, recalling how he always prioritized others before himself.
