Concerns About Care.com Safety Practices

Care.com is a widely used platform that connects users with various care services like childcare, senior care, pet care, and housekeeping. While it offers a convenient way to find caregivers, some important issues merit attention, particularly for parents.

A couple of years ago, journalist Edwin Dorsey began investigating Care.com after a friend, who worked as a babysitter on the platform, expressed concerns about its integrity. Dorsey’s subsequent experiments on the website revealed troubling aspects that many users might overlook.

Dorsey discussed his findings on the show “Relatable” with Ally Beth Stucky, sharing alarming insights about the company’s claims regarding safety. He noted that Care.com advertised itself as a secure option for finding babysitters and claimed to conduct thorough background checks. However, Dorsey’s own attempt to register as a babysitter revealed that these background checks were essentially nonexistent.

In a rather shocking test, Dorsey pretended to be the famous producer Harvey Weinstein, using an email address like harveythebabysitter@gmail.com. Surprisingly, he was approved to become a babysitter. To further probe the system, he then attempted to register as “Daffy Duck” and received approval once again. “They tell parents they’re conducting background checks and charge for them, yet they aren’t actually doing them,” he pointed out during the interview.

After publishing these unsettling discoveries, Dorsey faced backlash from Care.com, receiving legal threats directed at his parents’ home. Undeterred, he took his investigation further, filing consumer complaints with state attorney generals. He uncovered numerous safety issues, including the presence of individuals with criminal backgrounds working as caregivers.

“I found many people with criminal histories approved to babysit on Care.com. Tragically, there were cases where children were harmed because their parents were unaware,” Dorsey stated. His investigations led to additional research into another service, Kinderkare, which also raised significant concerns about child safety.

In his findings, Dorsey described instances of physical and verbal abuse within Kinder facilities, where serious lapses in safety occurred, such as children running into traffic or being left unattended in locked spaces. Despite the severity of these issues, he noted that media coverage of such stories was scant.

Dorsey’s extensive research underscores the urgent need for vigilance among families when choosing care services and highlights the discrepancies between promises made by platforms and the reality users might face.
