Two police officers in Milwaukee were killed in an ambush on Thursday, leaving the suspects still at large. One officer is in critical condition, while the other has injuries that are not life-threatening, according to police reports.
The situation escalated when officers responded to a report of an armed individual in an alley late in the evening around 9:20 PM. As they approached, shots rang out unexpectedly in the 2200 block of N. 24th Street. Both officers were hit and were unable to return fire.
The officer in critical condition is 32 years old and has more than six years of service, currently receiving treatment at a local hospital. His colleague, 29, also has over six years on the force and is in stable condition.
Police Chief Deputy Nicole Waldner stated that the suspects are known to law enforcement, but their identities haven’t been disclosed yet. Waldner emphasized, “The problem is that there are too many people with guns. I could put police officers on every corner, but that won’t stop those who shouldn’t have them from carrying.” Milwaukee’s Mayor Cavalier Johnson expressed confidence that those responsible for the attack would be held accountable.
In his comments, Johnson reflected on the day’s tragic events, saying, “It’s a sad day, a very sad day because officers should not be targeted.” The Milwaukee Police Association condemned the violence, labeling it “out of control.” They asserted, “This senseless act has struck at the heart of our community and department, pushing us to a breaking point.” They noted that five officers have lost their lives while on duty, and many more have been shot in recent years, calling for stronger leadership to combat the violence.
This fatal incident follows another recent shooting involving a Milwaukee officer, which adds to growing concerns about safety in the area. Recent statistics suggest that although the murder rate has fallen, incidents of carjacking have risen, placing Milwaukee among the more dangerous cities in Wisconsin.
