Tragic Loss of North Carolina Firefighter on Family Vacation
The community in North Carolina is mourning the sudden loss of a beloved firefighter who passed away while snorkeling with his family during a vacation in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Jay Lyon, the firefighter in question, encountered difficulties while snorkeling shortly after taking photos with his loved ones earlier this month. His girlfriend, Sonya Moore, shared her heart-wrenching experience, stating that it was a frantic scene. “I rushed, and while they were doing CPR, I literally couldn’t even stand,” she recounted. “I had my parents take my son, and I stayed with him. We tried to stabilize him. He was stable for a while,” she added, reflecting on the chaos that ensued.
Authorities quickly transported Lyon to a nearby hospital, while Moore attempted to arrange for a medical flight back to the U.S.
Firefighter’s Legacy
In a Facebook post dated June 6, the Red Oak Community Fire Department announced the tragic news: “We are sorry to report the loss of today’s brother, Red Oak firefighter Jay Lyons in a tragic accident while on vacation abroad.” He was remembered fondly as, well, someone who left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered.
During his career, Lyon worked at several North Carolina fire stations, including a deployment to the Little River Volunteer Fire Station for relief efforts following Hurricane Helen, showcasing his dedication to service.
The loss of Lyon has resonated deeply within the community. Edgecombe County acknowledged his contributions as one of the county’s first firefighters, highlighting his courage, kindness, and strength. “His influence was felt far beyond our team, and everyone who knew him admired and loved him,” the county articulated in a tribute.
Family Left Behind
Sadly, Lyon leaves behind two young daughters, ages three and one. It’s a profoundly heartbreaking situation, as the family navigates this unexpected tragedy.
In an effort to support his family, a GoFundMe named “Continuing Help for Jay Lyon’s Family” has been established. The body of Lyon was returned to North Carolina on June 23rd, closing a painful chapter for those who loved him.
