Stefanik and Hochul Clash Over Healthcare and Immigration Policies
Rep. Elise Stefanik, known as a strong supporter of Trump and rumored to be eyeing a run for governor in 2026, has taken a firm stance against New York’s Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul, labeling her “the worst governor in America.”
Hochul recently criticized Stefanik, asserting that her votes have jeopardized five hospitals, putting their personnel and patients at risk in what she sees as an attempt to aid Trump. “I don’t support that. I’m fighting relentlessly to protect New Yorkers’ healthcare,” Hochul stated.
In response, Stefanik tweeted, “Hello @KathyHochul! Welcome to the Fight.”
Stefanik has accused Hochul of enabling Medicaid benefits for undocumented immigrants, claiming this endangers New Yorkers. In her words, “New York’s Medicaid program has ballooned under Kathy’s administration, laden with waste, fraud, and abuse.” She further chastised Hochul, saying, “America’s worst governor oversees a poorly managed Medicaid program that affects the residents. Medicaid is a crucial program I’ve worked to bolster for New Yorkers.”
Additionally, she pointed out the plummeting support for Hochul in rural areas, claiming her own accomplishments in enhancing rural hospital outcomes are nationally recognized.
Moving on, Hochul has struggled to recall details about undocumented individuals involved in a high-profile case regarding a subway incident. Meanwhile, Stefanik expressed her relief about recent political activities, mentioning Hochul’s efforts to campaign and engage with local issues, such as her visit to Saranac Lake.
Stefanik has also pressed Hochul on her stance regarding Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani, who has stirred controversy with statements that criticize Israel and advocate for Palestinian support while identifying as a democratic socialist. Although Hochul mentioned plans to discuss his ideas with Mamdani, she hasn’t yet fully endorsed him.
As a prominent figure within the New York Democratic Party, Stefanik accused Hochul of fully supporting what she describes as an anti-Semitic candidate, adding that she is responsible for the unfolding situation.
Earlier in the month, Stefanik indicated to a Republican audience on Staten Island her strong interest in entering the gubernatorial race. She’s also launched a new State Political Action Committee, seemingly aimed at further solidifying the Republican Party’s influence in New York politics.
