Smuckers to Eliminate Artificial Colors and Dyes from Products
Smuckers has revealed plans to remove artificial colors and dyes from its food products, committing to this change by the end of 2027. In a recent announcement, they indicated that while many of their items already do not contain these additives, sugar-free fruit spreads and ice cream toppings will be impacted.
According to their press release, the JM Smucker Company stated, “Most of our consumer foods already lack FD&C colors, but this change specifically targets certain items including sugar-free options and products from the Hossess® brand portfolio.” They are also collaborating with distribution partners to ensure that these colored products will no longer be available in K-12 schools by the 2026/2027 academic year.
Mark Smacker, the company’s CEO, expressed the significance of this transition: “Throughout our 128-year history, we have adapted our offerings based on customer preferences. Our pledge to eliminate FD&C colors from selected products illustrates our dedication to meeting consumer expectations.” Smacker added that this change is part of a broader effort that includes reducing sugar content and removing high fructose corn syrup from items like Uncrustables® sandwiches.
Other brands such as Kraft Heinz, General Mills, and Nestlé have also made similar announcements regarding the removal of artificial dyes, aligning with a growing trend in the food industry, encouraged by public health advocates, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr. from the Health and Human Services. This recent movement suggests a significant shift in consumer demand toward more natural food options.
