Exchange Between Sen. Gillibrand and Mayoral Candidate Mamdani
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York recently urged mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani to denounce the phrase “globalize the intifadas” during a heated discussion on WNYC Radio with host Brian Lehrer.
After condemning various violent attacks connected to the Intifada campaign, which has its roots in the 1990s against Israel, Gillibrand expressed concern. She suggested that the phrase could be interpreted as an encouragement to harm Jewish people, which she found alarming. “People in New York are indeed wary of such statements,” she noted. “They remember past events and are cautious, especially regarding global jihad comments. Praising violence against Jews instills fear within our community. When one talks about a global intifada, it suggests a desire to annihilate Israel and kill all Jews.”
Gillibrand insisted that Mamdani reassure the public about his commitment to protect Jewish individuals and places of worship, as well as funding for community nonprofits.
Lehrer challenged Gillibrand’s insinuation that Mamdani had called for a “global intifada,” asking if she believed he had indeed pledged to safeguard the Jewish community in New York City.
Responding, Gillibrand mentioned a previous conversation with Mamdani where they agreed on the importance of protecting all residents. “I talked to him about this yesterday,” she said. “He agreed to work with me on this issue.” The back-and-forth continued, disrupting the flow of callers on the radio show.
In light of criticisms from New York Republicans, who warned of a potential “disaster” should Mamdani win, Gillibrand reiterated her commitment to community safety. “He has not proven any connection to Hamas or violent jihad,” she remarked, though she confessed to not having “all data and information” regarding Mamdani’s past statements. She expressed a desire to meet with him directly to discuss these issues further.
Lehrer pressed her on whether Mamdani had suggested a global intifada, which Gillibrand rebutted. “Words have consequences,” she stated firmly. “It’s about perceptions. For many within the Jewish community, using phrases like ‘intifada’ can be seen as supporting violence against Jews.”
As the exchange continued, Gillibrand conveyed a final message to Mamdani, stressing the need for leaders to be cautious with their words. “You can talk about various communities,” she said, “but the way your words are understood matters immensely. It’s irresponsible to suggest that police should not be involved. As a leader, protecting everyone should be a priority.”
Fox News Digital reached out to Mamdani’s representatives for a comment, but did not receive an immediate response.
