Trump Criticizes Senator Tillis After Vote
President Trump recently expressed his displeasure with North Carolina GOP Senator Tom Tillis for supporting what he called his “Big Beautiful” bill.
In his comments, Trump accused Tillis of misleading Americans about a substantial tax hike, claiming it contradicted what he described as the largest tax cut in U.S. history. This outburst followed a Senate debate that lasted about two hours on a major spending proposal, ultimately without reaching an agreement.
Trump made a point of emphasizing the need for lower taxes—this includes taxes on tips, social security, and car interest deductions—as well as robust support for border security, military, and legislation focused on benefiting farmers and manufacturers.
“Tom Tillis is making a huge mistake with the incredible people in America and North Carolina!” Trump remarked, making it clear he was not happy with Tillis’s decision.
Trump had been rallying support among Republicans in both the House and Senate, aiming to push the bill through by the July 4th deadline. His frustration boiled over shortly after Tillis’s vote against the Senate proposal.
Interestingly, two other Republican senators joined in to keep the matter alive for further discussion, which complicated the situation for the GOP.
With a narrow majority of 53-47, the GOP could only afford to lose three votes and still rely on a tiebreaker from Vice President JD Vance to push the bill forward.
Vance made his way to the Capitol to cast his vote but found himself waiting over an hour because there wasn’t enough support to initiate the discussion.
Earlier in the day, Trump had issued a warning to any potential opponents, suggesting that not supporting his bill would be seen as “ultimate betrayal.”
Tillis, for his part, had indicated he was inclined to vote against the proposed bill, citing concerns over how his Republican colleagues were handling Medicaid.
“We have to do better than this,” he stated, reflecting his ongoing skepticism.
