Passenger asked to discard Zyn packet by flight attendant leading to discussion on Reddit

While smoking and vaping are banned on flights, it seems that the use of nicotine pouches might be a gray area, depending on the airline’s policies.

The TSA has stated that passengers can pack these pouches in both carry-on and checked luggage. However, it’s up to individual airlines to set their own rules about using smokeless tobacco on board.

Major airlines like American, United, Alaska, Southwest, JetBlue, and Spirit haven’t made clear statements on their websites about the usage of nicotine pouches, according to user feedback.

In a recent discussion on Reddit’s “R/Delta” forum, one passenger shared their experience of being told what to do with their Zyn pouch. They recounted being asked to spit it out during a flight, stating, “Did you really know that was something?”

The passenger was in first class and mentioned a flight attendant came over with a cup and asked them to discard their Zyn. They explained, “I understood it was because they were tobacco products. I complied without arguing.”

There was some curiosity about whether this was an FAA regulation. Other users joined in, sharing their takes and similar experiences.

“It looked like a dip, probably due to how it was positioned on your lips,” noted one commenter.

Another wrote, “Zyn isn’t a cigarette. You can take it on a flight.”

One person raised a thought-provoking question about the mess that chewing might create, regardless of whether it’s classified as a cigarette, suggesting a potential disregard for cleanliness.

One user mentioned observing numerous people using nicotine pouches on flights without issue, as long as it’s discreet. They pointed out the irony that nicotine gum or patches seem to be perfectly fine.

Interestingly, someone shared they had seen an ad for Zyn on a recent United flight, asking if flight attendants were even aware of what it was, since it resembles gum or mint.

In Delta’s Carriage Contracts, the airline outlines its smoking prohibition, stating, “Delta bans smoking and utilizes all smokeless tobacco products (including e-cigarettes and steam) on all flights.” A representative clarified that this includes pouches and gum as well.
