Even Legends Need a Break
It seems that even icons require a day off. Dick Van Dyke, at 99 years old, had to skip a comedy event this past weekend due to an undisclosed illness.
Originally, he was set to host his music fundraiser, Vandy Camp, on Saturday, June 28th, but he canceled at the last minute. His wife, Arlene Silver, shared this update during an event at the Arlene & Dick Van Dyke Theatre at Malibu High School.
She mentioned that, unfortunately, Van Dyke wasn’t having a “good day.” Silver addressed the audience, saying, “Dick wanted you to know he couldn’t be here to celebrate with us today. Sorry. It’s not the van appearance you might have expected.”
She continued, “When you reach 99 and a half, there are good days and bad days. Sadly, today isn’t one of his good ones.”
However, Van Dyke still plans to join the event via livestream, and Silver expressed her “confidence” in that.
Throughout the event, Silver emphasized her husband’s dedication to musical fundraisers, asserting that Vandy Camp is more than just about him. “It’s a celebration of music that connects to our childhoods,” she explained. “Dick Van Dyke is a major part of that experience.”
She also talked about their a cappella group, Vantastics, and offered some encouragement, saying, “I feel confident enough to be here right now.”
Silver noted the challenges of stepping out of her comfort zone, saying, “I could never have done this like I did a year ago. I’ve had plenty of experience pushing myself, and now I’m here.”
She added, “I have to put on my brave face and take charge without the safety net of him being right there with me.”
The couple first crossed paths at the SAG Awards in 2006 and tied the knot in 2012, often discussing the notable 46-year age difference.
Despite reaching the century mark later this year, Van Dyke claims he has no intention of slowing down. “I thrive on the energy from the audience,” he remarked at another Bundy Camp in April.
Yet, living a long life comes with its challenges. Reflecting on the loss of friends, he shared his sentiments about Ed Asner’s passing last year, saying, “I’ve lost many friends.” Silver added, “It’s a tough aspect of reaching almost 100.”
Regardless, Van Dyke maintains a positive outlook. “Well, life has treated me well,” he confessed. “I can’t really complain.”
