New York Mayoral Candidate Responds to “Globalize the Intifadas” Controversy
During an interview on NBC News, New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani faced persistent questioning from host Kristen Welker regarding his reluctance to denounce the phrase “globalize the intifadas.” This issue has stirred divisive opinions among New Yorkers in recent weeks.
Welker pressed Mamdani, inquiring whether he would denounce the term after he expressed discomfort when asked about it. Mamdani, who recently won the Democratic primary against New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, responded by emphasizing that his language is rooted in a commitment to universal human rights. He stated, “My intention, which reflects much of my political stance, is that freedom, justice, and security should extend to all people, including both Israelis and Palestinians.”
As the conversation continued, Mamdani expressed that he had engaged with Jewish residents about concerns surrounding anti-Semitism. He argued that it isn’t the mayor’s role to police language, but he also stressed the necessity of condemning any form of bias. “We need to ensure there’s no room for anti-Semitism in New York City,” he said, adding that the goal is to confront issues while maintaining respectful dialogue.
Welker reiterated her question, highlighting concerns from individuals worried about the implications of the phrase. In response, Mamdani elaborated on the complexities and challenges surrounding language in political discourse, indicating that he does not want to be boxed into overly simplistic views or reactions.
Amidst this exchange, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand urged Mamdani to explicitly denounce the term during another interview, noting the sensitive nature of the language related to Middle Eastern conflicts and their consequences on local communities.
In a separate interview with Stephen Colbert, Mamdani addressed the question of Israel’s right to exist, affirming his support for both Israel and the rights of all nations in following international law.
