Dick Van Dyke Misses Comedy Event Due to Illness

99-year-old Dick Van Dyke was unable to attend the annual Bundy Camp comedy event because of an unspecified illness.

His wife, Arlene Silver, shared the news on Saturday at the Malibu High School’s Arlene & Dick Van Dyke Theatre. She explained that he had to withdraw right before the event began.

“Dick wanted to let you know he wasn’t able to celebrate with us today. Sorry,” Silver said to the audience. “When you’re 99 and a half, you have good days and bad days, and unfortunately, today isn’t one of the good ones.”

Instead of attending, Van Dyke participated via livestream. Silver mentioned to the crowd that he was “very confident” about his next appearance at the Bundy Camp event.

She conveyed just how much her husband cherished the event, describing it as a celebration of childhood and music that resonates with many. “Dick Van Dyke is a big part of that,” she added, highlighting his importance to his fans.

“These Bundy Camp events offer a wonderful chance to connect with each other,” she noted, expressing gratitude towards her husband and their music group, Vantix, for bolstering her confidence to speak on stage.

Although she felt a bit out of her comfort zone, Silver stated, “I have to wear my big girl pants and take charge without Dick here as my safety net.”

At 99, Van Dyke continues to lead a vibrant life, having appeared in “Mary Poppins Returns” back in 2018. However, he has reflected on the challenges of aging, recalling the loss of friends like Ed Asner. “I’ve lost quite a few friends,” he said, reminiscing during a Q&A in Malibu.

“He’s outlived everyone,” Silver remarked with a mix of pride and wistfulness.
