Vatican invites 'atheist' Anthropic cofounder to address AI event amid growing tensions with Trump administration

Pope Leo and AI Discussion

Ola, a 33-year-old AI researcher, played a notable role in an event centered around the pope’s letter, entitled Magnifica Humanitas, which emphasizes the importance of human dignity in the age of artificial intelligence.

However, Ola’s views don’t quite align with traditional Vatican perspectives. Back in August 2010, he tweeted about a website prompting UK citizens to protest Pope Benedict XVI’s visit. Then, in February 2011, he shared a link to an Irish Times article that reported on legal action against the pope for crimes against humanity.

Critiques of religion, especially Catholicism, appear in Ola’s past blog posts, which are still accessible. In one entry, he recounted a debate with some evangelists who emphasized the love of Jesus but confronted their claims about the biblical portrayal of God and instances of violence and oppression.

In another post, he expressed skepticism about the idea that the Bible is the word of God, questioning the origin of God itself, illustrating his philosophical inclination.

Ola draws parallels between the narratives of Jesus and Socrates, suggesting that early Christians might have crafted Jesus’s story to mirror that of Socrates to support claims of his unjust execution.

Identifying as an ethical vegan and atheist, Ola aligns with a philosophy known as “Sentientism,” which advocates for reason, evidence, and compassion towards all sentient beings.

Nathan Riemer, an executive director of an AI advocacy group, voiced concerns about the inclusion of secular figures in a religious discussion, suggesting that spiritual leaders should steer these conversations, not those who see themselves as divine.

Ola has a background with tech giants like OpenAI and Google, and he has shown interest in “effective altruism,” a contentious movement aiming for positive global impact.

Within Anthropic, Ola contributes significantly to what his colleagues refer to as Claude’s “soul document,” which guides the chatbot’s ethical framework. He has also sought insights from the Catholic Church in creating this moral compass.

His role has even been likened to that of a priest guiding Claude toward virtuous behavior.

The Vatican has yet to reveal what Ola will present during an upcoming press conference regarding the encyclical. Other speakers include Cardinals and theologians, alongside Pope Leo, who is set to address the gathering.

Ola previously expressed gratitude for the opportunity to speak at this event. He stated that the AI-related challenges need collaboration between diverse sectors, emphasizing the urgent need for varied voices to navigate these complex issues.

Vice President J.D. Vance praised the AI encyclical as significant and expressed eagerness to read it.

However, selecting a secular anthropological figure for this event may complicate the Vatican’s relations with the Trump administration. Pope Leo has been openly critical of Trump’s policies, and the president has shown disapproval of the pope.

Furthermore, the Trump administration’s tense relationship with Anthropic arises from legal disputes, with Trump describing the company’s leadership as “left-wing eccentrics.”
