Millennials look at the price of a $12 McDonald's meal from 1991 and how it compares to today's fast-food prices.

Reddit Users Reflect on Fast Food Price Changes

A group of millennials recently took to Reddit to reminisce about the low costs of fast food in their childhood, contrasting it with today’s prices. The discussion centered on a post that highlighted food prices from 1991, shared in a subreddit with around 800,000 members who were born between 1981 and 1996.

The post included a graphic showing that a McDonald’s meal was only $12, breaking down to 99 cents for fries, 79 cents for a cheeseburger, and $1.85 for a Big Mac. Interestingly, a Filet-O-Fish was just $1.29, and medium drinks were priced at 89 cents.

This nostalgic post garnered support from over 5,200 users and sparked more than 400 comments, with reactions ranging widely. Many Reddit users shared their fond memories of past prices and the quality of food, with one commenter asking, “Does anyone remember the 29-cent burger and the 39-cent cheeseburger?” Another noted, “This is my childhood,” reflecting on how a cheeseburger and a soda could be had for just a couple of quarters.

Some users expressed their concerns about how the dollar menu at McDonald’s has been dwindling since 1991. “Back in 2008, the dollar menu was incredible,” one said, while a resident from California commented on the current price of a McChicken being just over $4. Others pointed out that these historical price comparisons need to factor in inflation, making the current rates seem more reasonable.

However, there were skeptics who pushed back against the graphic’s claims. While some protested that prices seem high now, others suggested that even in 1991, $12 may not have been considered cheap by any measure.

In one particularly innovative move, a Reddit user attempted to recreate a 1991 meal order using promotional coupons available through the McDonald’s app. After all adjustments, including taxes, they found the total was around $26.26, surprisingly close to what they spent back in the day when adjusted for inflation. The user calculated that $12.07 in 1991 would translate to about $28.49 today, according to online inflation calculators.

Mcdonald’s, for its part, reassured customers that “value has always been part of McDonald’s DNA” and that franchisees work hard to keep prices manageable for their clientele. Despite nostalgic longings for past prices, it seems fast food pricing, like many things, is subject to the ebb and flow of economic pressures and inflation over time.
