Mets Struggling in Tough Stretch

For now, things don’t seem too dire for the Mets.

Owner Steve Cohen has mostly kept to himself during what can only be described as a difficult second half of June for the team. However, he did finally break his silence Monday morning, commenting on the situation.

“It’s a tough stretch, no sugar-coating it. I definitely didn’t see this coming,” Cohen shared on social media. “I’m just as frustrated as everyone else. We’ll get through this. Our injured pitchers will return in the coming weeks. I doubt other teams can keep performing at this low level. So, keep your faith!”

They’re likely most worried about the upcoming series against the lowly Pirates this weekend in Pittsburgh.

The 35-50 Pirates managed to sweep the Mets in three games at PNC Park, winning each by wide margins—9-1, 9-2, and 12-1 against one of the worst teams in the NL Central.

“We’re all frustrated,” said coach Carlos Mendoza on Sunday. “We know we’re better than this. It’s a rough patch, but we need to improve, starting with me. I’m supporting the team, but clearly, things aren’t going as we hoped.”

Before their recent slump, the Mets had a record of 45-24, but they haven’t won a series since June 13, dropping to 3-13 during that timeframe.

The Mets faced significant losses from the Rays, Braves, and Pirates, managing only one win against the Phillies and splitting a four-game series with the Braves.

A lot of the team’s difficulties can be linked to a string of injuries, particularly to pitchers like Griffin Canning, Kodai Senga, and Tyler Megill, all of whom have faced recent struggles. Even Sean Manaea hasn’t had his best season.

“We’re just not playing well, whether it’s in starting pitching, offense, bullpen, or defense,” Mendoza added. “We know we’re capable of so much more.”
