Carson Benge's home run against a left-handed pitcher stands out as a notable bright spot in the Mets' defeat.

Toronto Game Summary

In Toronto, Carson Benge made a notable impact during the eighth inning on Wednesday, preventing the Mets from suffering a shutout against the Blue Jays.

This home run was a highlight for the Mets’ lineup, but more significantly, it underscored Benge’s development as a rookie, who has now hit 10 home runs this season.

Interim manager Andy Green appreciated Benge’s energy against left-handed pitcher Patrick Corbin.

For Benge, July continued a successful trend—he had already hit five home runs last month.

“It’s impressive for a rookie to bounce back after a rough start, which is often when players get sent back to the minors for a reset,” Green remarked following the 9-3 defeat. “It speaks volumes about his competitiveness. We’re pleased with how he’s handled this season; he definitely has the potential for further growth.”

Benge ended the game with two hits in five at-bats, showing improvement with an OPS of .720 compared to just .498 on May 2.

Meanwhile, Jorge Polanco’s recovery at Triple-A Syracuse will focus more on DH at-bats rather than first base, as the Mets want to protect his left ankle from additional strain.

“We’re prioritizing his DH role right now, and we’ll make decisions based on how he feels,” Green noted. “When the time is right, I’m sure he’ll be back playing first.”

After a day off on Thursday, the Mets plan to stick with their rotation for the upcoming four games in Atlanta, with Christian Scott, Sean Manaea, Nolan McLean, and Freddy Peralta set to start in that order.

Further, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns remained tight-lipped about Steve Cohen’s position despite previous discussions suggesting Cohen’s job was secure.
