A 17-year-old girl was shot in the chaos outside Manhattan’s Stonewall Inn following a Pride Parade on Sunday night.
According to reports, a 16-year-old girl was involved in a confrontation around 10:15 PM in Sheridan Square, not far from the iconic LGBTQ+ bar in Greenwich Village. During this altercation, she accidentally shot a bystander, a 17-year-old girl, in the legs.
It appears that another individual in the group also started firing during the incident, but mistakenly hit her companion who had taken the first shot, striking her in the head.
The 16-year-old shooter was transported to Bellevue Hospital and is currently in critical condition, while the 17-year-old bystander was taken to Northwell Greenwich Village Hospital with injuries that aren’t life-threatening.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and investigations are ongoing. Authorities indicate that the violence does not seem to be motivated by hate.
Greenwich Village is historically significant, particularly due to the 1969 Stonewall riots, which sparked the gay rights movement in the United States. The Stonewall Inn has been a central part of the city’s annual Pride festivities.
Mayor Eric Adams expressed his sadness over the shooting in a social media statement, mentioning he was updated about the incident.
“It was sad to learn about tonight’s shooting at Stonewall Inn as the Pride celebrations are coming to an end,” Adams remarked on X.
This incident occurred shortly after false alarms of a shooting at Washington Square Park, where a shirtless man was taken into custody after using bear spray during the commotion. More than 50 people were reportedly injured amid the chaos, according to law enforcement sources.
