In Southern California, where recent wildfires raised concerns, police are planning to use drones to monitor illegal fireworks during the July 4th celebrations. This approach, while innovative, comes as many communities prepare for Independence Day with heightened awareness of fire safety.
According to local reports, the use of drone surveillance aims to deter activities that could lead to devastating wildfires, especially after some of January’s incidents were attributed to illegal fireworks use. Cities like Riverside and Hemet are spearheading this initiative, blending traditional regulations with advanced technology to catch lawbreakers in the act.
One resident recalled witnessing a person light a firework just before law enforcement arrived, highlighting the challenges these communities face. In a bid to tackle the issue, local authorities will issue citations, often sending them directly to property owners without prior notice, especially if they were in the vicinity when the fireworks were visible.
The fires that broke out in Pasadena and Altadena earlier this year were possibly linked to downed power lines, but many locals suspect that the Palisade fire on the opposite side of town may have reignited due to earlier illegal fireworks activity.
As stated by Governor Gavin Newsom’s office, the illegal sale, transport, or use of fireworks is strictly prohibited unless they are cleared by the state. So far in 2025, authorities have confiscated approximately £600,000 worth of illegal fireworks, underscoring the seriousness of the situation.
