Actors Oppose UK Government’s Plan to Label Palestinian Activists as Terrorists

Actors Tilda Swinton, Steve Coogan, Reggie Watts, and Roger Waters have signed a letter urging the UK government to reject a plan that would classify a group of Palestinian activists as terrorists.

The UK government is currently considering whether to label the activities of the UK-based Palestinian group as terrorism. The group has, since its inception in 2020, engaged in violent protests and property damage, specifically targeting the production of arms by the UK government, sometimes in connection with Hamas.

In their letter, the entertainers argued that the actions of these activists should be seen as efforts to “intervene to stop the genocide.”

“Palestinian actions are meant to save lives,” the letter states. “We regret the government’s decision to impose a ban. Calling non-violent direct actions ‘terrorism’ misrepresents the situation and undermines democracy.”

“The real danger to the nation doesn’t stem from Palestinian actions but rather from the government’s attempt to suppress them,” the letter further asserts. “We urge the government to rescind this ban and to halt the militarization of Israel.”

This letter follows a proposal from Interior Secretary Yvette Cooper to designate Palestinian actions as a national terrorist organization, placing it alongside groups like ISIS and al-Qaeda. However, the UK High Court has postponed this designation, allowing founder Huda Ammori to challenge Cooper’s plans legally.

A spokesperson for Palestinian artists commented, “No decision has been finalized, and artists have consistently contested this move. If the government persists with this ban, it will likely provoke significant backlash.”

The list of British artists who signed the letter includes notable figures such as Khalid Abdalla, Beezy Bailey, Tim Booth, and many more. Their collective voices reflect a strong opposition to the proposed classification.
