American Express to Close Amex Pay
American Express has announced that it will end its mobile payment service, Amex Pay, on July 31, 2025. This change will particularly impact users who utilize QR code payments in places that do not accept traditional credit cards.
For cardholders in Singapore, the ability to earn membership rewards or Krisflyer miles through Amex Pay at hawker centers and small retailers will terminate after this cutoff date.
Key Dates and Limitations
There are a few important dates to keep in mind:
- July 30, 2025: Last day to use Amex Pay for transactions.
- July 31, 2025: The platform will be deactivated, and all card details will be erased. At this point, QR and NFC payments will no longer function.
- Ongoing: Signs at participating merchants will gradually be taken down until the final cancellation date.
It’s worth noting that many vendors may start limiting support for Amex Pay as the deadline approaches. Customers might need to explore alternative mobile payment options, like Shopback Pay, to facilitate QR transactions.
In official communications, American Express has indicated that Apple users can still add new cards until the service ends. However, Android users are limited to using cards already linked to their accounts due to technical issues.
Transactions made via Amex Pay typically accrued standard earning rates based on local SGD spending, which provided a decent way for users to rack up points on smaller purchases. With the service going away, cardholders will have to adapt their reward strategies, especially in locations where credit cards aren’t commonly accepted.
