Democrats consider Mamdani's role in the party's reconstruction.

Democrats are currently navigating the rise of Zohran Mamdani within the party, especially following the significant defeat of former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.

After the primary results for New York City’s mayor were confirmed on Tuesday, support for Mamdani has remained sparse among party leaders, with Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) being one of the few to back him. On top of this, Mamdani’s recent comments about the “globalization of intifadas” and his ties to anti-Israel movements, like the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) campaign, have sparked further contention, especially regarding international law and its implications for Israel.

Meanwhile, donors to the Democratic Party have expressed frustration, some even threatening to withdraw their support. One donor remarked, “If this is what our party stands for, I don’t want to be associated with it anymore. It’s frustrating, and precisely why we’re in this predicament.”

Another donor revealed their confusion about the party’s identity, saying, “I really don’t know who we are anymore.”

Mamdani is currently leading Cuomo by over 7%, with a portion of votes still needing to be tallied. Many initially believed Cuomo had a solid chance of winning the race.

Longtime New York strategist Susan del Percio pointed out that Mamdani’s campaign has effectively overshadowed and surpassed Cuomo.

For many observers, Mamdani’s success reflects the growing divide within the Democratic Party between traditionalists and progressives who are pushing for change in the party’s direction as it seeks to rebuild.

Notably, the reluctance of veteran politicians and donors to publicly support Mamdani seems to reinforce his stance, according to strategists.

“Honestly, it might appear that there are hardly any members of the core Democratic Party left who truly support him,” one strategist suggested.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) have both distanced themselves from Mamdani.

Other Democrats, such as Rep. Laura Gillen (D-N.Y.) and Tom Suozzi (D-N.Y.), voiced concerns about Mamdani’s victory on social media platforms.

The tumultuous reception following his win left Mamdani contemplating how best to galvanize support. Meanwhile, Cuomo announced his intention to pursue an independent candidacy named “Fight and Deliver.” Mayor Eric Adams has also indicated plans to run independently, raised concerns about Mamdani’s socialist ideals.

However, some Democratic strategists argue that resistance from established party members could ultimately benefit Mamdani.

“His campaign critiques the influence of money, as New York increasingly caters to the top 1%,” said one strategist. “If I were Mamdani, I would want everyone to see how the wealthy are rallying against me.”

Others in the party contend that opposition from traditional funding sources may not have much impact on Mamdani’s campaign.

“They can finance opposition, but where’s the grassroots energy?” questioned Democratic strategist Basil Smikle. “The establishment needs to engage with him because that’s where the momentum is.”

“What will they do to compete against this growing support?” Smikle added.

The forthcoming months of the mayoral race will be crucial for Mamdani’s backing from prominent Democratic figures, according to strategists.

“It’ll be interesting to see how the business community reacts,” noted strategist Anthony Coray. “Will they gather around third-party options? Will they meet with Mamdani to express their concerns about his tax proposals and the potential for high earners to relocate to lower-tax states?”

“A lot of Mamdani’s promises hinge on increasing taxes on the finance and real estate sectors,” Coley mentioned. “If high earners and businesses choose to move to places like Florida for better tax benefits, he will face significant challenges.”

Political analysts suggest that Mamdani’s rise can largely be attributed to the everyday New Yorkers grappling with high living costs in the city, and they claim the party establishment hasn’t offered anything substantive for voters to rally behind.

In light of this, Mamdani has seized the opportunity.

“If Democrats were wise, they would adjust their platforms to win back their donors and address issues instead of ignoring him,” Del Percio commented. “The rise of figures like Mamdani points to the lack of viable solutions offered by the party,” she asserted.

Del Percio emphasized that it’s crucial for Democrats to rethink their approach.
