Georgia Tax Rebates Update
Are you wondering about your Georgia surplus tax refund? You’re not alone in this.
The Georgia Department of Revenue reports that 40% of eligible residents have received their special refunds, with agents actively working to process more checks each day.
Here’s what you should know.
Key Details
In April, Governor Brian Kemp approved House Bill 112, which allows for a special state income tax refund totaling $1 billion.
These one-time rebates are available to eligible taxpayers who meet specific requirements and will be issued after the state’s processing in 2024.
The rebate amounts are structured as follows:
- $250 for individuals filing separately as single or married
- $375 for those filing as head of household
- $500 for couples filing jointly
If you pay state taxes or have opted for a refund via direct deposit, you can expect the funds to be credited directly to your bank account. Otherwise, a paper check will be sent to you.
It’s worth noting that under Georgia law, these rebates aren’t considered taxable income. However, if recipients have any outstanding debts to the state, their rebate may be reduced. Also, no interest will be paid on these amounts.
This marks the third occasion in recent years that Georgia has issued special tax refunds, following similar distributions in 2022 and 2023.
Recent Announcements
Just last week, Governor Kemp mentioned that over $488 million of the $1.2 billion slated to be returned to Georgians has already been processed.
Kemp highlighted his commitment on social media, stating, “Taxpayer money ultimately belongs to hardworking Georgians, not government! So we’re working hard to get this year’s special tax refund in our pocket.”
Officials at the Revenue Office indicated that the number of refunds being processed is growing weekly, which has caused some delays. They are monitoring the situation closely to avoid any complications.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for a rebate, taxpayers must meet the following criteria:
- Have filed both Georgia income tax returns for 2023 and 2024
- Not be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s 2023 return
- Be a full-time tax resident of Georgia
- Have paid more in state taxes than the rebate amount
What You Can Do
If you’re expecting a refund, you should receive it in the upcoming weeks unless you’ve filed your taxes or borrowed money by the May 1 deadline.
To check the status of your surplus tax refund, visit the Georgia Department of Revenue’s site. You’ll need to input your Social Security number or individual taxpayer ID number along with your federally adjusted gross income from your Georgia tax return. This information is updated nightly.
Be prepared for a wait; if you filed by May 1, 2025, it could take six to eight weeks to receive your refund.
