Mamdani wins the Democratic primary for mayor in New York City, defeating Cuomo.

After an impressive win last week, Zoran Mamdani has officially been declared the victor of the Democratic primary for mayor of New York City. However, there are significant questions that remain. Will this 33-year-old democratic socialist, who notably defeated former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, continue on with his independent campaign in the upcoming November general election?

The New York City Election Commission has released the official results from three rounds of ranked-choice voting in last week’s primary, showing Mamdani took the lead with 56% of the votes in the final round. Cuomo, who was a three-term governor but stepped down in 2021 amid scandals, secured 44% as he sought to make a political comeback. He had led the race for months until Mamdani gained momentum towards the end.

Mamdani’s unexpected win has shaken up the political landscape for Democrats. He’s now a step closer to becoming the first Muslim mayor of the United States’ largest city. His campaign drew in over 545,000 votes, making it the highest total for a Democratic primary winner in nearly four decades, with turnout exceeding 1 million— the largest since 1989.

“I’m humbled by the support,” Mamdani expressed on social media, adding that this was just the start of a broader coalition aiming to make New York City more affordable.

Currently, Mamdani is viewed as a frontrunner in the general election, where Democrats currently outnumber Republicans nearly 6-1. He’s set to face off against Mayor Eric Adams, who is running for reelection with diminished poll numbers after encountering several challenges.

Adams’ approval ratings declined significantly after he faced five charges last year related to bribery and fraud, which were ultimately dismissed by the Justice Department. This allowed him to continue focusing on immigration issues, collaborating with former President Donald Trump’s administration.

As for Cuomo, he remains in the mayoral race and has hinted at the possibility of running as an independent candidate, despite missing the deadline for independent line voters. Reportedly, he hasn’t yet committed to an aggressive campaign strategy for the general election, leaving potential voters in suspense. If he does step back at any point, his name would still appear on the ballot.

Cuomo’s campaign advisor hit out at Mamdani, suggesting that promises made by progressive candidates aren’t practical solutions to the city’s problems, implying a disconnect with what voters actually want. “We’re still engaging with the community to determine our next steps,” he said.

Mamdani’s rise can be attributed to his bold campaign focusing on issues like affordable living and supported by prominent figures such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders. His ability to engage younger voters through social media, including TikTok, has significantly increased his visibility.

His proposals, which include fare-free public transportation, rent freezes, and free childcare, have evidently resonated with many, particularly those under 30. This younger demographic’s turnout was unexpected and could lead to a shift in the city’s political dynamics.

Ultimately, Mamdani’s primary win has sparked discussions about the agenda within the Democratic Party, especially considering recent election losses at the national level. New York’s key Democratic leaders have acknowledged his campaign’s success but are choosing to remain neutral for the time being.
