Rep. Chip Roy Criticizes Senate’s Tax and Spending Bill
On Tuesday, Rep. Chip Roy from Texas expressed his disapproval of the Senate’s version of the GOP’s tax and spending bill, labeling it a “tragedy.” He anticipates significant changes will be required before the bill reaches the president.
In an interview on Fox News’ “Faulkner Focus,” just prior to the Senate’s final vote, Roy criticized last-minute agreements made by senators, singling out Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.
“I think they are really diluting what we originally aimed to deliver to the President regarding the Green New Scam. The Senate seems to be succumbing to pressure from lobbyists,” Roy commented. “It’s like Senator Murkowski is trying to protect some funds for her home state.”
“This feels tragic; it seems the Senate is not prioritizing what’s best for the American people,” he added.
Murkowski played a pivotal role as the 50th Republican vote, participating in negotiations that took place from Monday night to Tuesday morning. She focused on revisions important to her, including Medicaid provisions for Alaska and cuts to SNAP funding, ultimately agreeing to increase the rural hospital fund to $500 billion.
Her support was crucial for Republicans, enabling Vice President Kamala Harris to cast the tie-breaking vote and help set the legislative agenda.
Roy, who voted in favor of the House version in May, voiced concerns about spending levels in the Senate’s proposal.
“The key issue is whether the Senate can put in place the necessary spending controls to tackle the inflation tax that’s affecting everyday Americans,” he remarked shortly before the vote.
“We’re looking at potential tax cuts that might not materialize if we fail to act,” he noted. “Without spending controls, the bond market could suffer, inflation might persist, interest rates could rise, and home ownership could become even less accessible.”
Roy expressed that he fears the Senate’s version might undermine the positive aspects of the House’s approach to advancing the president’s agenda.
“The president is advocating for tax cuts and looking to abolish this new green scam. There’s a lot at stake,” Roy concluded. “I think we still have work to do this week to get it right.”
