Leah Thomas Stripped of Titles at University of Pennsylvania
Leah Thomas, a transgender swimming champion, has lost her university swimming titles at the University of Pennsylvania. This decision came after pressure from the Trump administration to award the title to a competitor assigned female at birth.
The university will also formally apologize to all biological female athletes who have faced defeats from biological males. This follows an investigation by the Department of Education’s Civil Rights Office.
Linda McMahon commented on this, describing the resolution agreement as reflective of the “Trump effect.” She noted that, thanks to President Trump’s actions, the university has acknowledged past violations of Title IX and committed to protecting women’s sports for future female athletes.
The agreement with the university requires several actions, including adopting a “biological definition of male and female” for Title IX purposes. It also includes a statement indicating that biological men will no longer compete in women’s sports or use women’s locker rooms.
This decision has been met with approval from some athletes who have witnessed the impact of transgender inclusion in women’s sports recently.
A former swimmer at UPenn expressed gratitude for the administration’s stance, sharing her experiences of competing against male athletes and the challenges of sharing facilities. She emphasized the importance of safeguarding women’s rights in sports.
Riley Gaines, a former swimmer from the University of Kentucky, also spoke out. She voiced her hope that institutions would respect women’s civil rights going forward and prioritize dignity, safety, and equity for women.
